5 This is the latest full-length album from Black Metal band Thornspawn. It seems that the boys from San Antonio, Texas are attempting to keep a low profile while their fellow black metal outfits gain popularity. This may be a good thing as they are sticking to their underground roots but it also means that the production on this album cannot compete with that of the former bands. The intro track “Prelude to War” sets the tone for the rest of the album perfectly, with its sombre and bleak sound that bleeds from the speakers. Unfortunately, the album doesn’t live up to expectations from this point, the opening riff from the next track “Vengeance of a Hell Preacher” appears to have been stolen from an Early Carcass recording, and the album sounds like it was recorded in a biscuit tin. The drumming seems to be the main emphasis on most of the tracks and the guitar has a strange, washed out sound to it, though having said that some of the chord arrangements are quite impressive and powerful, and the lyrics are graphic and well written. Overall there isn’t really much to recommend on this album, it doesn’t break any new ground and is rather bland. If you are a Thornspawn fan, however, by all means pick it up but otherwise be very cautious about purchasing this cd.
