At the dawn of modern black metal, one artist fused all elements of a future genre - ambient rhythm, melodic transitions, speeding riffs, terrible production - into a ripping package of fiery metal angst and spirit. In a style barely known by name Bathory invented a strictly destructive form than its predecessors, using elements from primary influences Venom and Slayer. Since a real drummer was not possible, a drum machine makes simple pedaling rhythm. Over this moves raw black metal: riffs using longer arrangements of chords and internally varied rhythms, like phrases in classical music or jazz, repeated over an unchanging beat. Riffs are either simple fragments inspired by Slayer or Discharge, or longer Wagnerian melodies chiseled in powerchords. Both frightening and almost gentle in its ambient and natural style, this album introduces the passion of black metal.
